CDRS platform targets W-CDMA, WiMAX base stations

Xilinx Inc. and AXIS Network Technology have announced the CDRSX, a common digital radio system (CDRS) development platform for W-CDMA and WiMAX base stations. The CDRSX Development Platform increases power amplifier (PA) efficiency, enabling OEMs to use lower cost, lower power PAs. This provides significant saving as the PA and transceiver stage can consume 40-60 per cent of a base station's total cost.

The CDRSX development platform consists of an AXIS development board and W-CDMA and WiMAX digital front-end (DFE) reference design IP from Xilinx. The AXIS board contains RF preamps, ADCs and DACs, a Xilinx Virtex-II Pro FPGA to provide interface support for CPRI, OBSAI and digital I/Q connectivity, a Xilinx Virtex-4 SX55 FPGA for implementing digital radio signal processing, and an OS for control of the board via Ethernet.

The board has two transmit and two receive paths, plus two additional receive paths for digital pre-distortion. It can support any 20MHz spectrum in the 400MHz to 4GHz frequency range. The board is capable of driving the PA from 2-40W, while providing an effective receiver noise figure per path of 3dB.

The Xilinx reference design IP includes 3-carrier digital up conversion, 6-carrier digital down conversion and 3-carrier crest factor reduction functions. These functions provide a reduction in the peak to average power ratio of 5.60dB for W-CDMA and up to 1.57dB for WiMAX radios.

The CDRSX Development Platform is available today from AXIS and is priced at $34,995. The Xilinx W-CDMA reference design IP is immediately available from Xilinx. The Xilinx WiMAX reference design is scheduled for release Q4 2006.
