United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) is making decent progress on 65nm node development, according to an analyst at CLSA Asia Pacific Markets.

Although demand for its foundry services is expected to wane in the current quarter, the company focused on technological progress at the 65nm node during its recent quarterly investor conference in Taipei.

"They mentioned about being engaged with customers in the FPGA, graphics, handsets and broadband applications, and their target to be working on 14 (plus) products by year-end," wrote chip analyst Ming-kai Cheng in a recent research note.

"We believe UMC is working with Broadcom, ATI, TI and Xilinx, but the volumes are not firm yet. A good ramp on these products does have the potential to help UMC translate the year 2007 into a much stronger year, when compared to 2006," he said.
