Silicon wafer shipments are expected to increase by 18 per cent in 2006, reaching 781.1 crore square inches, according to a recent survey conducted by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).

Wafer shipments are projected to grow an additional four per cent in 2007, 14 per cent in 2008 and five per cent in 2009, topping out at 976.4 crore square inches, according to the survey of members of SEMI's Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG).

Total wafer shipments are expected to experience robust growth through the entire forecast period, with an average compound annual growth rate of more than 10 per cent from 2005 to 2009, the survey found.

"We are currently seeing unprecedented demand, driven by the end market electronic applications," said Tatsuhiko Shigematsu, chairman of SMG and chief technology officer at SUMCO Corp. The silicon segment that is experiencing the greatest growth is 300mm, which is anticipated to be over 30 per cent of total silicon volumes in 2007."
