Executives from the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) association recently visited India to survey and analyse the growth of the local semiconductor manufacturing industry. SEMI had earlier met with Indian design companies and manufacturing equipment providers such as Applied Materials interested in manufacturing flat panel displays, solar cells and MEMS devices.

"We also want to get an understanding on non-manufacturing related opportunities, find out what our members will need to establish their support facilities and see what role SEMI itself will have to play in this country," said Paul Davis, executive vice president of SEMI.

SEMI is identifying what its members will need in India and hopes to have a full-time representative or local agent in the country so that the interests of SEMI members can be better served.

"We are sure semiconductor manufacturing will happen in India but we are trying to understand how and when

that will happen. That is why we are waiting for the government's policy on semiconductor manufacturing to be announced," Davis said.
