Mirroring the ongoing shift in IT away from computing, the PC industry's largest graphics card maker, Nvidia Corp., marched into the recent Computex touting its MobileMedia Platform for handheld devices that use Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0.

Earlier this year, the graphics chip designer rolled out its latest handheld GPU, the GoForce 5500, at the 3GSM show in Barcelona, Spain. At Taipei's Computex, the largest IT trade show in Asia, Nvidia continued its push to generate momentum for pairing the GoForce with Windows Mobile 5.0.

Both Intel and Freescale announced reference designs for the Windows-based MobileMedia Platform. Nvidia will link up with Intel's newest processor family—code-named Monahans—which is based on the third-generation Intel XScale processor. Freescale's contributions to the development platform are the MXC and i.MX processors.

Nvidia said it expects a handful of phones to be announced later this year that will be based on the Freescale and Intel reference designs. Until recently, Microsoft had primarily worked with Taiwan's High Tech Computer for development of smart phones, but it is now reaching out to other Taiwan and Chinese design houses. For ODMs designing handsets for mobile TV and gaming, Nvidia's MobileMedia Platform should provide another steppingstone to a faster market launch.

The platform includes a development kit for ODMs containing all of the hardware and software components that will help them design handset platforms to handle high-performance applications like mobile TV and video clips, or compute-intensive 3D graphics for gaming.

Hardware-based acceleration covers many multimedia standards, from DVB-H, DMB and ISDB-T to H.264/MPEG-4, WMV9 and surround-sound audio.

During the past few months, Nvidia has garnered a handful of design wins for the platform, such as the Samsung i310 mobile phone, a handheld gaming device from iRiver and a smart phone tuned for mobile TV created by High Tech Computer.
