Measurement toolkit targets next-gen automotive ECUs

National Instruments (NI) has released the ECU Measurement and Calibration Toolkit 2.0, extending the company's LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI and Microsoft Visual C/C++ development environments to support measurement and calibration applications for designing and validating automotive electronic control units (ECUs). With the latest upgrade, NI said automotive engineers now can use the toolkit to develop and verify next-generation ECUs with the Universal Measurement and Calibration Protocol (XCP).

The toolkit works with all NI CAN Series 2 interfaces on PXI, PCI and PCMCIA and provides support for the LabVIEW Real-Time Module for applications that require deterministic communication.

According to the company, this toolkit delivers high-level, easy-to-use functions based on XCP and CAN Calibration Protocol (CCP), which engineers can use to build their own customised measurement and calibration applications. Other measurement and calibration tools on the market use expensive turnkey applications that offer limited customisation. Using this solution with the NI LabVIEW graphical development environment, engineers can create highly specified ECU measurement and calibration applications, replicate their test systems and integrate the applications into existing ECU test applications for a fraction of the cost, the company explained.

NI will exhibit its LabVIEW-based tools at the 6th Annual Embedded Systems Conference-Taiwan on August 17-18 at the Taipei International Convention Center. According to NI marketing engineer John Wu, LabVIEW has for the past two decades been providing engineers and scientists the tools they need to improve product quality, shorten time-to-market and achieve greater engineering and manufacturing efficiency.

"Because LabVIEW has the flexibility of a programming language combined with built-in tools designed specifically for test, measurement and control, you can create applications that range from simple temperature monitoring to sophisticated simulation and control systems," added Wu.
