The Power Forward Initiative (PFI), an industry group addressing obstacles to low-power IC design facing the electronics industry, announced its plan to invite a limited number of EDA companies to participate in the Initiative.

EDA companies that will join will be given access to the Draft Version 1.0 of the Common Power Format (CPF) specification and work with other PFI members to evolve Version 1.0 towards broad industry adoption and standardization. Draft Version 1.0 is targeted for release by Jan. 31, 2007 to the PFI membership.

The PFI was announced just two months ago. The CPF aims to link design, verification and implementation to reduce risk and increase predictability in chip power reduction. Members will work to adopt an automated design infrastructure aimed at reducing chip power consumption. To achieve its goal, PFI charter calls for, among other things, the refinement of the CPF specification to capture all essential design intent for power and link the design, implementation and verification domains.

The addition of EDA advisors is another key step to further the Initiative's goal to develop the CPF specification with the intent of submission to a standards body for adoption. The EDA advisors will be invited to attend an educational workshop on CPF to be held in the fall timeframe.

Current participants in the Initiative include Advanced Micro Devices, Applied Materials, ARM, ATI Technologies, Cadence Design Systems, Freescale Semiconductor, Fujitsu, NEC Electronics, Royal Philips Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg Co.
