The NFC Forum, a non-profit industry association advancing the use of near field communication (NFC) technology, announced that Hewlett-Packard (HP) has joined the forum as Sponsor member. The forum also added three associate level members in July, bringing total membership to 85 organisations.

As a group, NFC Forum's Sponsor members represent the leading players in key industries in all the major regions of the world. HP joins MasterCard International, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd, Microsoft Corp., Nokia, NEC, Renesas Technology, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung, Sony Corp., Texas Instruments and Visa International, receiving a seat on the Forum's Board of Directors.

New associate member organisations that joined the NFC in July 2006 include RFI Global, Stollmann E&V GmbH and 02Micro.

NFC is a short-range, standards-based wireless connectivity technology that allows consumers to perform safe contactless transactions, access digital content and connect electronic devices—with a single touch. In June of this year, the forum unveiled its technology architecture, which, when completed, will include specifications that define a modular NFC device architecture, and protocols for interoperable data exchange and device-independent service delivery, device discovery and device capability.
