Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. is to start assembling LCD televisions in Russia from September, meeting what it says is strong local demand. The Japanese group announced the plans as it started assembling plasma TVs to serve another emerging market, in Brazil.

In both instances, the key components, including the LCD panels for the Russian plant, will be shipped from Japan.

Matsushita said it would sub-contract production of the LCD TV sets to a local but unnamed company in Kaliningrad. It plans to produce 50,000 sets in its fiscal year that ends in April 2007, and the annual target for the following year is 250,000 units.

The move is part of Matsushita's efforts to take the lead in the plasma TV sector in the so-called BRICs market that comprises Brazil, Russia, India and China. The group already has a plasma TV assembly facility in China.

Matsushita said earlier this month that it aimed to boost its flat-panel TV sales by 70 per cent to Rs.39611.60 crore ($8.6 billion) (1 trillion yen) as part of the growth strategy for its consumer electronics division.

Separately, Matsushita said last week (July 19) it would start taking orders this September for 103-inch plasma TV screens for shipments soon after that date. They will be sold under the Panasonic brand, but the majority would not be for use in homes but for businesses that need electronic billboards.

Matsushita said it plans to make 5,000 of the giant plasma TVs in the first year.
