Inductorless EL lamp driver IC

Supertex Inc. has unveiled the HV852 low-noise electroluminescent (EL) lamp driver, the second such product in the company's series of inductorless ICs for minimizing the number of external components, works at a lower operating voltage than the first generation HV850 and, with a wider operating range, provides greater brightness.

The single-output HV852, for 1.5-inch2 lamps (maximum 5.3nF load), uses a patented charge-pump scheme to eliminate the (external) inductor, diode, and high-voltage capacitor traditionally found in competing products. Working from a 2.4-5V input, it delivers an output of 160V p-p.

The HV852 is available from stock, priced at Rs.52.25 ($1.14) each (MSOP-8 package) and Rs.53.16 ($1.16) each (MLP-10 package), both in 1,000 quantities. Lead-time for production quantities is four to six weeks ARO.
