Li-ion linear charger boosts thermal foldback regulation

Texas Instruments has announced a 1A, single-cell Li-ion linear charger in the company's bqTINY family, touts enhanced thermal foldback regulation and power management electronics to charge more safely and efficiently from a cradle or AC adapter.

Working from a wide-range input (up to 26V), the bq24060, for PDAs, cell phones, digital cameras and wireless headset applications, boasts complete charge management capability with unique safety and low-dropout features. These include an enhanced algorithm to reduce charge time, maximize total charge, and protect the battery from thermal and electrical overload. The bq24060 resumes charging when the battery voltage falls below an internal threshold, and it enters a low-power sleep mode when the external input supply is removed.

This chip, which integrates a power FET and current sensor, also includes a reverse-blocking protection scheme to prevent battery drain in the absence of the DC supply. In addition, the bq24060 can be configured to operate in the LDO mode, which is useful for board testing before complete system test during the end-equipment manufacturing phase.

The bq24060 also includes an over-voltage protection feature. In addition, the bq24060's enhanced thermal foldback regulation feature allows it to run continuously in harsh environments where the ambient temperature is high, such as in an automobile during the summer, or when the chip is connected to an adapter with an input voltage above the device specification.

Housed in a 10-pin, 3-by-3mm MLP package, the bq24060 is priced at Rs.55 ($1.20) each in 1,000-piece orders.
