DSP will top Indian chip market, says ISA

DSPs will top the Indian semiconductor market by revenue in 2006, contributing Rs.3,955.13 crore ($863 million) to the country's total market size of Rs.16,590.46 crore ($3.62 billion), according to a study commissioned by the India Semiconductor Association. Microprocessors with a market of Rs.2,671.89 crore ($583 million) will be the second biggest category, followed by microcontrollers contributing Rs.2,149.43 crore ($469 million) and memory products with Rs.2,034.85 crore ($444 million). sensors will be the smallest product category account for just Rs.233.73 crore ($51 million) in sales, it said.

"DSPs and microprocessors have emerged as the leading semiconductor product categories, as the [Indian] market for desktops and mobile phones are expanding at a faster rate," the study said. It was carried out by Frost & Sullivan for the India Semiconductor Association.

According to the end-user segment break-up, communication devices and communication equipment will dominate as the main consumer of semiconductors in India. The share of share of computing devices and products and consumer electronic products will decline, the study added.
