MosChip develops processor for secure network interface

MosChip Semiconductor Technology Ltd, a supplier of semiconductors for connectivity and networking solutions, has come out with a turnkey solution for VPN firewall appliance manufacturers.

The MCS1000 IPSec processor, combined with software by Kenati Technologies, enables OEMs and ODMs to quickly develop PC-based Secure Network Interface Cards (NICs). It performs as a standard 10/100 NIC, but with the additional feature of hardware acceleration of the IPSec protocol.

The MCS1000, a highly integrated VPN SoC, consists of a 200MHz, 32bit, ARM926EJ RISC microprocessor, three 10/100 Ethernet interfaces and IPSec acceleration hardware. The processor core has a memory management unit so that it can run Linux or on RTOS.

The Ethernet interfaces include a PHY so the chip can be connected directly to Ethernet magnetics. The IPSec acceleration unit supports AES, DES, 3DES, MD5 and SHA1/2. The MCS1000 is ideal for a VPN Firewall Appliance or a Secure Network Interface Card (NIC).

Kenati has ported their VPN firewall software to the MosChip MCS1000 Processor to take advantage of MCS1000's integrated IPSec acceleration hardware and its high integration. Available as a production-ready binary, the software can be customized for the OEM/ODM with their logo, name and colour scheme. The Linux-based software is full-featured, tested and requires no modification by the customer.

The MCS1000 has an internal ROM which enables internal booting of the device. The device can then be configured to accept commands from the PCI interface. The host system downloads the code to be executed by the MCS1000 via the drive and through the PCI interface. The Custom driver (Win or Linux) performs all interaction between MCS1000 and the host processor.

The Windows driver operates with the standard Ethernet and Crypto books found in Windows. The Linux driver operates with the Openswan application.
