Sonics Inc. claims a breakthrough in SystemC-based SoC modelling for latest versions of its SonicsMX Smart Interconnect and SonicsStudio. The release is said to deliver a seamless SystemC-to-RTL design flow that provides consistent SystemC or RTL versions of specific SonicsMX configurations. SystemC-based configurations can be migrated to an RTL form ready for functional verification and logic synthesis.

The SonicsMX SystemC and RTL models support a range of transaction-level modelling design techniques, enabling SoC architects to explore architectural choices such as topologies, protocols, buffering, quality-of-service, security, power management and pipelining.

In contrast, traditional SystemC-based architectural approaches focus purely on algorithmic and contention-oriented performance analysis.

That leaves many key system and physical optimisation issues for the RTL design phase, which employs different methodologies. This version of SonicsStudio eliminates such risks when using SonicsMX.

"As SoC complexities continue to increase, and as the interconnect increasingly becomes the centerpiece of the design, it's essential that SoC architects analyse the performance and cost trade-offs of the interconnect as early as possible in the development project," Drew Wingard, chief technology officer at Sonics, said. "The previous versions of Sonics- Studio have already enabled Sonics' customers to make this shift, and now the availability of SystemC models for SonicsMX expands the SoC architect's exploration capabilities into higher levels of abstraction.

"The models and the latest version of SonicsStudio also support seamless iterations between SystemC and RTL views of SonicsMX and enable teams to deploy ESL techniques incrementally. This has a far-reaching impact on the adoption of SystemC modelling by SoC developers."

SystemC versions of the Sonics Smart Interconnects solutions, such as SonicsMX, are usable in CoWare Inc.'s Platform Architect product and will be available directly from CoWare Inc.
