Linear regulators tailored for noise-sensitive apps

National Semiconductor Corp. has introduced a family of low-noise linear regulators for power supplies of noise-sensitive systems.

Applications for the adjustable-output LP3878 and fixed-output LP3879 include medical instrumentation, wireless routers and power supplies used in ASICs, FPGAs and DSPs.

The output voltage of the LP3878 is adjustable from 1V to 5.5V, while the LP3879 has fixed output options of 1V and 1.2V. According to National Semi, both products feature 800mA maximum continuous output current; typical output noise of 18μV; sense option that improves load regulation for distant output traces; less than 10μA quiescent current in shutdown, which is important for portable applications; and, over-temperature and over-current protection to protect the regulator and the system application.

Both products are designed for use with low-ESR ceramic capacitors, reducing solution cost compared to tantalum capacitors, as well as reducing high-frequency noise, the company said. Both the LP3878 and LP3879 are available in 8-lead PSOP and LLP packages are priced at Rs.38.34 (85 cents) in 1,000-unit quantities. Pb-free package options are also available.
