ON Semi acquires LSI's Gresham fab

ON Semiconductor has announced that its primary operating subsidiary, Semiconductor Components Industries LLC, has completed the purchase of LSI Logic Corp.'s Gresham, Oregon, wafer fabrication facility and certain other semiconductor manufacturing equipment for approximately Rs.473.66 crore ($105 million), under terms of a definitive agreement executed on April 5, 2006.

The company also paid LSI approximately Rs.405.99 crore ($90 million) in proceeds to date, with the balance due within 90 days of closing according to the agreement.

ON Semi has hired substantially all of the LSI manufacturing employees currently working at the facility. According to the company, the purchase of the Gresham fab significantly enhances the company's internal manufacturing capabilities, having gained the skilled process development engineers, operational expertise and process development know-how.

In addition, the acquisition is expected to help enable the company to develop a larger mix of high volume, low cost, high-performance submicron analogue and digital power products down to the 0.18µm level, with toolset capabilities down to the.013µm level in the future.
