LG Electronics said it will begin producing 50-inch plasma display panels this month using a technology that slices three panels from a single glass substrate.

Reported to be the largest PDP maker by volume, LG expects the process to boost its monthly 50-inch PDP capacity at its A1 and A2 lines in Gumi from 50,000 to 150,000 panels. In addition, the PDP substrate size will be enlarged to 1,164-by-1,950mm, according to the company.

LG Electronics added that it has completed preparations to increase the number of 50-inch panels from a single PDP glass sheet to six at its A3 Gumi production line.

Last September, LG began producing 42-inch PDPs by cutting six panels from a single glass sheet. The company plans to cut eight panels from one sheet starting the third quarter.
