The rate at which the market for NAND flash memories will grow in 2006 is going to be less than half the rate achieved in 2005, according to market forecast company iSuppli Corp.

According to iSuppli, NAND market would grow by 29 per cent from its 2005 level to reach a size of Rs.61,603.20 crore ($13.8 billion), or about 5.4 per cent of a total worldwide semiconductor market worth Rs.11,36,980.80 crore ($254.7 billion) in 2006 having grown by 7.4 per cent. Although it shows a very strong growth, it contrasts with the 62 per cent annual growth the NAND market achieved in 2005.

The DRAM market, however, is expected to bounce back in 2006. Annual growth of 6.2 per cent is set to take the market size up to 2640 crore (26.4 billion). Although the growth rate is paltry compared with that of NAND flash the DRAM market will remain twice the size of the NAND flash market if iSuppli's predictions come true, iSuppli said.
