Praetorian CM1452 EMI filter

California Micro Devices is offering its generation Praetorian CM1452 EMI filter with ESD protection for wireless handsets in a 0.40mm pitch chip-scale package (CSP), which saves up to 45 per cent board space compared with 0.50mm pitch CSP or plastic TDFN packages. It also eliminates the need for additional diodes for ESD protection.

Leveraging the company's proprietary Praetorian process technology that allows for the integration of spiral inductors on silicon for improved filter performance, ESD protection, a small form factor and lower cost when compared to competing resistor-capacitor and ceramic-based solutions, the CM1452 provides both EMI filtering and ESD protection for interfaces that connect the host processor to the camera and display modules in wireless handsets.

Each channel of the CM1452 consists of a three-pole L-C filter with a minimum inductor value of 17nH and nominal capacitor values of 15pF. Insertion loss is lower than R-C filters, typically less than 1dB. The device also features excellent filter performance with a typical corner frequency of 300MHz, a roll off of 20dB/octave and attenuation greater than 30dB between 800MHz and 3GHz. It also offers ESD protection up to ±15kV contact discharge per IEC61000-4-2 Level 4 specification and ±30kV using the Human Body Model (HBM).

The lead-free CM1452 devices are housed in CSPs that measure 1.67-by-1.05 mm, 2.47-by-1.05mm and 3.30-by-1.05mm for the four-, six- and eight-channel versions, respectively.

The CM1452 is currently sampling, and pricing starts at Rs.10.71 (24 cents), Rs.14.73 (33 cents) and Rs.18.75 (42 cents) in quantities of 1,000 for the four-, six- and eight-channel configurations, respectively. Production is scheduled for Q2 2006.
