SigmaTel Inc. filed a lawsuit against South Korean chip maker Telechips Inc. alleging that Telechips is infringing upon three SigmaTel patents.

SigmaTel filed suit in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, the company said, seeking damages and an injunction against Telechips. In order to provide a more immediate remedy, the company said it intends to ask the Court for a preliminary injunction before a trial. If granted, SigmaTel believes this preliminary injunction could stop Telechips' alleged infringement this year.

According to the company, it plans to initiate an investigation against Telechips' products through the International Trade Commission (ITC), as it did with Chinese fabless company Actions Semiconductor. Last month, an ITC judge sided with SigmaTel in that matter, ruling that Actions infringed two SigmaTel patents.

"The company has been successful in protecting its intellectual property in the past and continues to amass ammunition for that fight," said Ron Edgerton, SigmaTel president and CEO, in a statement. He added that the two of the patents involved in the Telechips lawsuit were issued in February. The company anticipates having up to another 100 MP3-related patents issuing over the foreseeable future.
