ST designs transceiver for home automation apps

STMicroelectronics (ST) has announced the latest addition to its narrowband power line communications products—the ST7540, a power line transceiver designed for compact and cost-sensitive home and building automation applications and remote monitoring systems.

The ST7540 is a half-duplex Binary-FSK transceiver designed for two-way network communication over power lines, with eight selectable carrier frequencies covering CENELEC bands A, B and C, and four programmable baud rates from 600bps to 4,800bps. This device integrates a single-ended power amplifier with accessible input and output lines that can be used with external signal components as part of a tuneable active filter for the transmission path. According to the company, this feature provides superior linear power performances and reduces the applications parts count and cost.

The transceiver also has a programmable header recognition and frame length count, which supposedly increases power-efficiency by activating the external MCU only when a message with a specific header or frame length is detected. It also has a programmable output level freezing to increase transmission stability in particularly noisy environments. The on-chip available-output-voltage and current loops allow the transmission levels to be automatically and safely adapted to the line impedance.

Reduced in size and pin-count, the ST7540 maintains the core technology of the earlier ST7538 but without some accessory functions such as zero crossing detection and the uncommitted operational amplifier. In addition to the 5V regulator found on the ST7538, the transceiver has an on-chip 3.3V 50mA voltage regulator intended for different types of external microcontrollers.

ST said the ST7540 enables the design of very compact home and building automation and is also ideal for outdoor applications such as street lighting controllers and automatic meter reading systems. Its integrated design and power amplifier topology significantly reduces the overall bill of materials cost of such products, the company added.

The ST7540 is available in sample quantities in the 28-pin HTSSOP28 exposed pad package. Volume pricing will be around Rs.223.20 ($5) in quantities of 1,000 pieces.
