Samsung offers 32GB NAND flash-SSD for mobile PCs

Samsung Electronics announced it has begun offering the 32GB NAND flash-based solid state disc (SSD), calling the move a milestone as it allegedly marks the initial entry of the NAND flash memory into the mass mobile PC market.

The 32GB Flash-SSD, which serves the same purpose as a hard disc drive, is a sophisticated data storage medium for notebooks and other mobile computers. It uses instantly accessible, non-moving NAND flash memory instead of the rotating discs found in traditional hard drives. This enables it to upload and download data quickly and quietly with minimal power consumption, the company explained.

The Flash-SSD is free of any motor or mechanical parts and weighs about half as much as a comparably-sized hard drive, but it reportedly reads data three times faster and writes 1.5 times faster. The SSD is noiseless and uses just five per cent of the electricity needed to power a hard disc drive.

Samsung sees the overall global SSD market surging from Rs.2,389.50 crore ($540 million) in 2006 to Rs.19,912.50 crore ($4.5 billion) by 2010.
