Fujitsu Ltd and Yokogawa Electric Corp. have allied on optical transmission systems for next-generation networks such as 40Gb backbone networks and 100Gb Ethernet. Under the strategic partnership, the two companies intend to combine Yokogawa's compound semiconductor technology with Fujitsu's optical transmission system technology.

Yokogawa has been developing and producing compound semiconductors for its measurement systems and entered into photonic module device market in 2001. The business generates about Rs.38.06 crore ($8.6 million) sales.

Last December, Yokogawa reported it had succeeded in verifying operation of an optical packet switch that relayed optical signals without a light-to-electric signal conversion as in conventional switching. The company is now building a new compound semiconductor fab in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, investing Rs.951.38 crore ($215 million).

Yokogawa will sell devices produced through the alliance to third party companies. Fujitsu maintains its alliance with Eudina Device Inc., Fujitsu's compound semiconductor joint venture with Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd.
