Swedish telecom equipment vendor Ericsson has opened an R&D centre in Chennai, which will focus on creating value-added applications for the multimedia and prepaid wireless phone segments.

Ericsson is also setting up its global services delivery centre in the country. Speaking at the opening ceremony for the centre, Dayanidhi Maran, minister for communications and information technology, said the government hopes to see more IT companies set up R&D facilities in India.

The company also proposes to invest about Rs.442.50 crore ($100 million) in the country, said Mats Granryd, managing director of Ericsson India. But he did not specify how that investment would be deployed.

Ericsson, which is a supplier to leading mobile-service providers in India, also has a factory in Jaipur, where it makes radio base stations.
