Microchip Technology's TC4451 (inverting) and TC4452 (noninverting) MOSFET drivers, designed for use in switching power supplies and similar high-speed, high-current applications, can deliver peak output currents of 12A. These chips are the company's highest current MOSFET drivers to date, and they're among the highest in the industry, according to the company.

"Today's power supply system designers face seemingly contradictory demands to develop systems with higher load currents and speeds, but also with smaller external components," said Jim Mack, senior product marketing engineer for the analogue and interface products division. "The circuits that drive the power MOSFETs in such systems must also reflect these attributes. With their ability to rapidly charge and discharge the gates of even the largest MOSFETs in power supply systems, the TC4451 and TC4452 drivers help designers to meet all of these requirements while keeping costs low."

These devices feature high latch-up immunity (resistance to ground bounce and negative input transients that can cause false triggering in noisy environments) and fast switching (27ns for a 15nF load) to drive large MOSFETs and IGBTs in demanding, high-efficiency switch-mode supplies.

Pricing for the TC445X MOSFET drivers in 8-pin SOIC and PDIP packages are Rs.63.72 ($1.44) each in 10k-unit quantities, Rs.72.57 ($1.64) in the eight-pin DFN package, and Rs.80.09 ($1.81) each for five-pin TO-220 package.
