MP3 players, digital cameras and other handheld electronics products are set to become less-attractive targets for theft, thanks to a new patent-pending technology called Tool-Lok.

Implemented with embedded RF circuitry and controlled by a small wireless electronic key, Tool-Lok allows users to disable handheld electronic systems, tools and gadgets at the touch of a button, rendering them valueless for thieves. The locking function is timed so that any device that uses a power source will function for a predetermined number of hours or until a preset time of day is reached.

With a minimum of design changes, manufacturers can implement Tool-Lok in new or existing products that use digital circuitry. In using highly integrated, advanced wireless communication semiconductor devices, physical space requirements are minimized. In most cases, Tool-Lok can fit within the existing device enclosure.

The operational parameters of devices equipped with Tool-Lok can be reprogrammed with a PC via a user-friendly interface, or over an appropriate wireless network. For easy control of multiple devices, one electronic key can be programmed to control multiple devices, each with its own operating parameters.

"Tool-Lok is the ideal solution for any product that is expensive to replace but impractical to insure," said James Goodhart, president at Tool-Lok, Inc. "With theft prevention and personal safety on every consumer's mind, Tool-Lok is the only solution that provides both benefits."

When implemented in conjunction with a customer registration programme, a unique serial number stored in the internal electronics can be read out by authorities, aiding in the return of stolen or lost electronics or tools. With its wireless communications ability, Tool-Lok can also be used for device location identification. Tool-Lok can find and communicate with a variety of network configurations, giving authorized users the ability to not only identify the location of their property, but also to reprogram the operation of the device.

It is already available for licencing to a variety of market segments. In addition to providing the technology intellectual property, Tool-Lok Inc. provides a complete service for designing the technology into new or existing products or can act in a consulting role on Tool-Lok implementations.
