LSI Logic Corp. has announced the availability of its SATA II 3Gbps MegaRAID storage adapter. The product comes with a 133MHz PCI-X host interface, features eight SATA II ports and 128MB of onboard DDR I cache. The adapter is fully backward compatible with SATA II 1.5Gbps drives, and supports the Serial ATA Revision 2.5 specification. Features available with the adapter include native command queuing, enclosure management (SAF-TE), individual drive activity, and fault LED headers that allow users to view the status of hard drives through LEDs on the chassis, staggered spin-up, hot plug and port multiplier.

According to Luca Bert, director of DAS product management at LSI Logic, customers seeking an internal RAID solution for high data-throughput storage applications will benefit from the MegaRAID adapter. "Offering data transfer rates of up to 3Gbps per port in a low-profile form factor, the adapter addresses the growing demand for RAID in high-density rackmount chassis environments," Bert said.

The software suite included with the adapter features management tools that allow users to configure, monitor and manage RAID systems locally or over a network. A remote battery option, which is sold separately, can protect the integrity of the cached data, providing backup power for up to 72h in the event of a complete power failure. Featuring an Intel XScale processor, the product supports several OSes, including Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2000/XP, Red Hat AS Linux, Novell Netware, SuSE Professional Linux and Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and FreeBSD.
