Samsung develops sunlight readable LCD screen

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd has developed a 1.72-inch super-reflective (SR) LCD screen that can be read easily outdoors even when the sun is shining brightly. The company said the reflectance rate for the transflective SR LCD technology is three times that of qqVGA-resolution (128 x 160 pixels) mobile displays. It also said that it achieved the breakthrough in reflectance by applying silver with high reflectance instead of aluminium. The company also developed a reflective lens that significantly improved the rate at which light is concentrated into pixels.

In addition, to prevent an increase in power consumption, Samsung combined the super-reflectance technology with transflective (illuminating the screen from front and back) instead of transmissive (illuminated from behind the screen) panel technology. The transflective mode is said to make more effective use of natural outdoor lighting than the transmissive mode. In addition, the transmissive mode would have increased power consumption by requiring a brightness of at least 300 nit to sufficiently improve outdoor visibility.

Designed for cell phones, the super-reflective 1.72-inch LCD has a brightness of 100 nit, a contrast ratio of 220:1/30:1 (transmission/reflection) and 50 per cent colour saturation.

"Our super-reflectance technology allows us to offer consumers a high-quality LCD that is very easy to read in bright sunlight. The SR technology has improved the reflecting metal, the colour filter and other parts of the assembled LCD module, in addition to the lens and reflectance rate, without increasing production costs or lowering yields," said Jin-hyuk Yun, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile display business team, in a statement.

Samsung plans to incorporate the SR technology into all its high-resolution transflective displays in phases. Currently, the 1.72-inch SR LCD is only available as a prototype. A roll-out schedule has not been determined by the company.
