Radiation hardened DC/DC converter modules integrate EMI filter

International Rectifier (IR) has introduced the LS series of radiation-hardened (RAD-Hard) low-voltage, single- and dual-output DC/DC converter modules. These modules, which include an internal MIL-STD-461C CE03-compliant EMI filter, deliver isolated output voltages from 1.5V to 15V with typical efficiency ratings up to 83 per cent, which, according to IR, is at least 5 per cent more than the closest competing device.

"Supply voltages for FPGA, ASIC and DSP circuits continue to decrease from 3.3V to 2V and lower. Our LS series converters offer proven and efficient, off-the-shelf solutions that include EMI suppression," said Rick Furtney, VP of IR's HiRel Sector Business Unit.

By including the EMI filter, the company explained, that the modules simplify power management circuits used in satellite applications, including low Earth orbit , middle Earth orbit, geostationary Earth orbit, as well as in scientific missions that have long life requirements of up to 15 years or radiation design requirements of 100Krads.

The low-voltage converters are characterized with total ionizing dose of greater than 100K Rad(Si), and single event effect linear energy transfer of heavy ions greater than 82MeV.cm2/mg in accordance with MIL-STD-883. The fixed-frequency, single-ended forward converters switch at 575kHz. Other features include 18V to 40V input range, magnetically coupled feedback to insure optimum cross-regulation when the loads are unbalanced, adjustable output voltage, and a device weight of less than 85g.

Pricing begins at Rs.29,3150 ($6,500) each in production-unit quantity.
