LG to manufacture CDMA handsets in India

Korean electronics supplier LG Electronics has announced plans to establish a manufacturing unit in India to make CDMA handsets for the Indian consumer.

"We are contemplating starting manufacturing CDMA handsets by next year," said LG Electronics India Ltd Managing Director Mr. K.R. Kim, in a statement. LG will manufacture CDMA handsets at its existing plant in Pune. The Pune plant now produces over one million GSM mobile handsets. The company aims to scale up production capacity of GSM mobile phones to 10 million by 2010. No details were announced regarding the investment LG would have to make to start this latest venture.

Samsung Electronics has also announced that it would manufacture handsets in India, joining other handset

suppliers that have previously announced plans to manufacture there.
