Industrial semiconductors generated Rs.91,300 crores ($20 billion) in global revenue for 2004, according to market research firm, Databeans Inc. The largest industrial semiconductor segment was industrial controls, with an estimated 32 per cent share of the market. Other segments within the industrial semiconductor market were: test and measurement (23 per cent), military/aerospace (11 per cent), and medical (10 per cent). Products not specific to any of these segments constituted about 24 per cent of the market.

Analogue ICs constitute the largest market share of industrial semiconductors, at 18 per cent of the market, and demand is especially strong now for analogue power and special purpose components. The industrial analogue IC market was valued at Rs.15,521 crores ($3.4 billion) for 2004.

Industrial controls, test and measurement represent the largest opportunities for ASIC/ASSP industrial analogue suppliers, with a combined estimated market value of over Rs.4,565 crores ($1 billion) for this year. And although it is relatively small, the medical segment is where most of the growth is taking place, due to the increased demand for home medical electronics and rapidly evolving medical technology.

Visibly, more high performance analogue suppliers are focused on this space, bringing to market scores of new products optimized for such high end applications as medical imaging, patient monitoring, and implantable devices.
