Small IR LEDs enable infrared sensing for portable devices

Touted as one of the smallest surface-mount infrared (IR) LEDs available in the industry, the small size of the new TT electronics OPTEK Technology OP200 IR LED, packaged in a 0805 size, enable design engineers to incorporate infrared sensing into portable electronic devices. They are also suitable for non-contact position sensors, machine automation systems and miniature optical encoders.

The OP200 devices are GaAlAs infrared LEDs (880nm wavelength), packaged in a 0805 chip with a flat molded lens which provides a wide beam angle and an evenly distributed emission pattern. These devices are designed to be mechanically and spectrally matched to OPTEK's OP520 series silicon NPN phototransistors.

Electrical specifications include a 30V reverse voltage, 1.5V forward voltage, and 50mA continuous forward current. Power dissipation is rated at 130mW at 25°C. The device produces 0.2mW/cm² apertured power at 20mA forward current.

The OP200 devices are RoHS-compliant, as well as compatible with high temperature (260°C) Pb-free soldering processes, and are rated for operation from -25°C to 85°C.

Typical pricing for the OP200 sensors starts at 20 cents each in quantities of 2,500. Samples are available immediately. Delivery is from stock to four to six weeks for production quantity.
