German chip maker Infineon Technologies AG has sold its "PTB" series of bipolar RF transistors - including wafers, die, packages, lids and specialized assembly equipment - to specialist RF transistor maker Peak Devices Inc. Sept. 6.

The purchase price for the product line was not disclosed.

Peak specializes in extending the life of mature RF transistor product lines by designing and manufacturing drop-in replacement transistors for those no longer supported by other manufacturers.

The PTB product line is used in television broadcast, cellular radio, satellite communications, and digital audio broadcast and includes transistors producing from 1 watt to 220 watts of RF output power, operating from 420-MHz to 2.2-GHz, said Peak Devices (Boulder, Colo.).

"This acquisition is a great fit for Peak Devices, as we have just completed fabrication of our first state-of-the-art HF, VHF and UHF silicon bipolar wafers which have significantly better performance and ruggedness than legacy bipolar technologies. This perfectly complements the UHF 2-GHz PTB Bipolar transistor line," said William McCalpin, chief executive officer of Peak Devices, in a statement.
