Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. is planning to build four DRAM wafer fabs over the next six years at a cost of about $10 billion, according to a Techworld.com report, which cited Powerchip vice president Eric Tang, as its source.

The wafer fabs are expected to cost between $2.2 billion to $3 billion each, the report said. The report did not comment on how Powerchip would try to raise the money.

Powerchip (Hsinchu, Taiwan) would be betting that consumer electronics equipment, including games consoles and cellular telephones, would include DRAM chips, while many of its rivals head off in pursuit of the market for non-volatile flash memory, the report said.

"We plan to build two new factories every three years for the next six years to meet demand," the report quoted Tang as saying.
