Intel Corp. has reported that 13 carriers around the world are now deploying fixed WiMAX networks with 11 more carriers expected to enable WiMAX connectivity before the end of 2005.

Using the Intel PRO/Wireless 5116 broadband interface, the following carriers have now deployed commercial WiMAX networks: Altitude Telecom(1) (France), AXTEL(1) (Mexico), BEC Telecom, S.A.(1) (Dominican Republic), Dedicado(1) (Uruguay), Globe/Innove(1) (Philippines), Iberbanda (Spain), Irish Broadband(1) (Ireland), SferaNET(1) (Poland), Mikkelin Puhelin Oyj(1) and Savonlinnan Puhelin Oy(1) (Finland), Telgua(1) (Guatemala), Ukrainian High Technologies(1) (Ukraine), and WiMAX Telecom(1) (Austria and Slovakia).

"As WiMAX gains momentum in full deployments, homes and businesses gain the ease and power of cost-effective wireless networking," said Scott Richardson, general manager of Intel's Broadband Wireless Division in a statement. "We are now delivering the promise of WiMAX—high-speed, cost-effective wireless broadband access—to businesses and consumers in cities and suburbs around the world."

These deployments build on the growing WiMAX availability supported by different governments and by Intel's Asian Broadband Campaign, an initiative aimed at encouraging WiMAX development in Southeast Asia.
