Philips opens Shanghai design center

Posted: 17 Nov 2005     Print Version  Bookmark and Share

Royal Philips Electronics has opened a design center in Shanghai, China to help local handset manufacturers develop low-cost phones for emerging markets.

The new design center banners the company's initiative to address the growing consumer demand for sub $20 phones for China, India, Eastern Europe, Africa and South America by 2008. The center will have the latest development tools, provide local technical support and hardware and software expertise to ODMs, OEMs and operators to quickly address design issues and speed up product development.

"An untapped global consumer base of 3.3 billion people in key markets represents a huge opportunity for handset manufacturers and operators alike," said Frans van Houten, president and CEO of Philips Semiconductors in a statement. "With Philips' ultra low cost Nexperia Cellular System Solutions and dedicated local support through the design center, manufacturers can quickly develop affordable handsets to enable consumers to connect to each other and to entertainment, information and services while on the move."

Philips has already teamed up with China TechFaith Wireless Communication Technology Ltd to deliver a reference phone to help manufacturers reduce production costs and increase time-to-market.

"The new handset will help relieve the financial and operational risks manufacturers face when deploying new, and often unproven, handsets in emerging markets by reducing development and production costs, and improving time-to-market," stated Tony Lear, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Greater China of Philips Semiconductors.
