On Semiconductor has revealed that it has acquired Swiss-based Axsem AG, a vendor of sub-gigahertz radio chips, for an undisclosed amount.

Axsem was founded in 2000 and has developed several RF ICs for high volume communications including for SigFox, EnOcean, wireless M-Bus and proprietary standards. These RF transceivers complement On Semi's existing 2.4GHz (ZigBee) and wired (MBus, KNX and HART) offerings. The Axsem portfolio supports the Internet of Things (IoT), automatic metre reading, home automation, sensor networks and satellite communication markets.

"Adding AXSEM's low-power RF chips, microcontroller technologies and system experience to our applications product group is another step towards expanding the company's presence in the high-growth industrial IoT segment," noted Bob Klosterboer, EVP, application products group, On Semi.
