Nvidia powers lunar lander and rover

Kevin Peterson, CTO of Astrobotic Technology Inc. (Pittsburgh) brought two unusual GPU-powered vehicles to the show floor: a lunar lander and rover. The lander uses a Magic-1 system from General Electric that includes an Nvidia Tesla GPU; the rover uses Kepler GPUs to handle vision and compression apps.

Kevin Peterson, CTO of Astrobotic Technology brought two unusual GPU-powered vehicles to the show floor: a lunar lander and rover.

In December, Astrobotic won the latest milestone challenge between five top contenders for the Google Lunar X Prize. If all goes well, a SpaceX rocket will carry the systems out of Earth orbit at the end of 2016. It is now testing its own propulsion systems that will get it to the moon.

The effort is funded by customers paying the company to deliver scientific instruments, small rovers and "ad payloads" to the moon. It expects to carry up to 500kg of cargo.
