Wireless transceivers take on IoT, smart metering

ON Semiconductor has unveiled the NCS3651x family of system-on-chip (SoC) transceivers geared for the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart metering applications. These transceivers have been developed using ON's mixed signal integrated device technology and radio frequency (RF) design. Based on the IEEE 802.15.4-2006 standard, the 2.4GHz ultra-low power wireless transceivers support protocols such as ZigBee, 6loWPAN, WirelessHART and proprietary versions.

These solutions are also ideal for use in low data rate, intermittent communication IoT applications in consumer appliances. All devices are optimised for low power consumption and high efficiency with single supply operation from a standard battery (1V to 3.6V) and low receive and transmit currents, enabling alternative energy solutions such as energy harvesting.

The NCS3651x incorporates a 32bit ARM Cortex-M3 processor as well as various configurations of RAM for data storage and flash memory for programme storage. This includes a full memory configuration, which will allow customers to support multiple application and software protocols. Multiple peripherals enable the design of a complete wireless network with a minimum of external components.

The NCS3651x family is expected to be in volume production in early to mid-2015. The devices are housed in QFN-40 RoHS-compliant packages.
