Intel bares Xeon processors for workstations, servers

Intel has upgraded its Xeon processors for workstations and serves to version three, producing in the process its fastest, lowest power E5-2600/1600 Haswell family, which carries up to 18 cores per socket.

In benchmarking the new 22nm, 3D Tri-Gate technology, including "per-core" dynamic regulation, Intel claimed its new Xeon processors had already broken world performance records with up to threefold increases over generation two.

"We continue to hold the world record in energy efficiency on the planet," Diane Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Data Center Group, said during the IDF opening keynote.

  • Compared to the previous-generation Ivy Bridge, we are gen over gen tripling the performance. The Xeon E5-v3 includes up to 18 cores, a 50 per cent increase over the prior generation. It includes 45MB of cache. It includes the first deployment of DDR4, which increases bandwidth dramatically from 1,886 mega-transfers per second to 2,133, and we're delivering a top frequency of 2.7GHz. We are also including the new solid state drive... using PCI Express as the interface, which provides a throughput increase of 6X, and the latency is reduced by 2X... and the capacity goes up from 800GB to 2TB. And finally, as part of the platform, we are launching our new 40Gbit Ethernet... including virtualisation features, as well as packet processing accelerators.

Intel also claims it is helping to redesign the data centre with enhanced security, using its Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (AES-NI) for enhanced and accelerated data encryption and decryption by up to 2X without sacrificing application response times.

The new Xeon E5-2600 also exposes key metrics through telemetry sensors for CPU, memory, I/O utilisation, and thermal air-flow, as well as new management features to ensure that software-defined infrastructure takes full advantage of the evolving cloud-based services industry.

"Software-defined infrastructure drove the development of this new platform," Bryant said. "And we believe it will be the foundation that turns software-defined infrastructure into a reality."

Intel claims data centres using its new Xeon E5 processors will be able to implement automated workload management faster to increase the efficiency and improve the quality of traditional and cloud-based services. It also claims its improvement in the storage and network capacity and efficiency can match the speed-up in its Xeon E5 v3 processors.
