They can also have a similar alert for school buses, to know when to expect the kids to be home. Cameras will also record all activities inside the vehicle, and hence act as a deterrent for crime, increasing passenger safety.

Law enforcement agencies

Law enforcement can be tricky for there is no tamper-proof evidence available, which can be admissible in courts. Given that the STS can encrypt the recorded video and meta-data, the video files are tamper-proof. Additionally, the agencies can have a pre-defined route for every vehicle and receive alerts on any deviation.

Overall, it will ease the process of bringing in criminals while having pre-emptive alerts that can prevent crime to the safety of the commuters.

Fleet operators

The maximum gains from the STS are accrued for the fleet operators. While they indirectly benefit from passenger safety, amenable staff behaviour and fleet health monitoring, there is a lot more that they can leverage.

Fleet operators can negate false claims on injuries caused to passenger from rash driving, by bringing in evidence of the vehicle state (e.g. stagnant/accelerating/sudden braking) that is time-synced with the recorded video. Such a system can reduce the insurance premiums by bringing in important and accurate record-keeping. Even in cases of accidents, the STS can represent he driver actions throughout the critical period.

The solution can also generate data on average speed, fuel consumption for individual vehicles, thereby building quantitative data on driver behaviour. This can be used to introduce training programmes and identifying the changes required to reduce the overall risk for the fleet. Effectiveness of training can also be measured with post-training data generated for comparison.

With connected devices and Internet of Things being realised in various domains, it is time that the traditional fleet operations embrace new technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and customer satisfaction.
