EDA industry logs 3.8% revenue increase

The EDA Consortium (EDAC) Market Statistics Service (MSS) has revealed that the electronic design automation (EDA) industry revenue increased 3.8 per cent for 2Q13 to Rs.10,398.74 crore ($1653.4 million), compared to Rs.10,018.87 crore ($1593 million) in 2Q12. Sequential EDA revenue for Q2 dropped 0.9 per cent compared to Q1, while the four-quarters moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased by 5.3 per cent. The total revenue for the most recent four quarters (3Q12 through 2Q13) was Rs.42,269.81 crore ($6720.9 million), noted the organisation.

"EDA industry revenue continued to grow in Q2 2013," said Walden C. Rhines, board sponsor for the EDAC MSS and chair and CEO of Mentor Graphics. "IC physical design and verification was especially strong in Q2, with PCB & MCM, SIP, and services also increasing. Geographically, the Asia Pacific region again reported double digit growth, with the Americas and Europe/Middle East/Africa regions also positive."

Companies that were tracked employed 29,304 professionals in 2Q13, an increase of 3.9 per cent compared to the 28,205 people employed in 2Q12, but down 0.2 per cent compared to 1Q13.

The largest category, computer aided engineering (CAE), generated revenue of Rs.3,843.40 crore ($611.1 million) in 2Q13, which represents a 1.2 per cent decrease compared to 2Q12. The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 5.6 per cent.

IC physical design & verification revenue increased to Rs.2,364.78 crore ($376 million) in 2Q13, a 14.7 per cent increase compared to 2Q12. The four-quarters moving average decreased 0.4 per cent.

PCB and multi-chip module (MCM) revenue of Rs.932.70 crore ($148.3 million) represents an increase of 5.2 per cent compared to 2Q12. The four-quarters moving average for PCB & MCM increased 10 per cent.

Semiconductor intellectual property (SIP) revenue totalled Rs.2,716.98 crore ($432 million) in 2Q13, a 2.7 per cent increase compared to 2Q12. The four-quarters moving average increased 8.4 per cent.

Services revenue was Rs.541.51 crore ($86.1 million) in 2Q13, an increase of 1.2 per cent compared to 2Q12. The four-quarters moving average increased 4.9 per cent.

The Americas, EDA's largest region, purchased Rs.4,493.08 crore ($714.4 million) of EDA products and services in 2Q13, an increase of one per cent compared to 2Q12. The four-quarters moving average for the Americas increased 3.5 per cent.

Revenue in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) was up 7.4 per cent in 2Q13 compared to 2Q12 on revenues of Rs.1,764.15 crore ($280.5 million). The EMEA four-quarters moving average increased 6.1 per cent.

2Q13 revenue from Japan decreased 12.3 per cent to Rs.1,425.79 crore ($226.7 million) compared to 2Q12. The four-quarters moving average for Japan decreased 3.4 per cent.

The Asia/Pacific (APAC) region revenue increased to Rs.2,716.35 crore ($431.9 million) in 2Q13, an increase of 18 per cent compared to 2Q12. The four-quarters moving average increased 14.4 per cent.
