Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) is claiming the world's fastest notebook graphics card with the release of its AMD Radeon HD 8970M. The GPU promises improved performance and enhanced visual effects, the company said.

The HD 8970M leverages different AMD technologies to bring the best gaming experience to mobile gamers, noted AMD. The GPU is powered by AMD's Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture to ensure the device's optimum speed. It also uses AMD's Enduro Technology that improves its battery life and the AMD Eyefinity technology that allows for the highest quality multi-display gaming spread across several different monitors, creating an immersive experience, AMD said.

The company's App Acceleration harnesses the compute power of the Radeon GPU to take workload off the CPU and provide unprecedented performance in everyday applications. It also offers full support for DirectX 11.1 and Windows 8 for all of today and tomorrow's games and applications.

"Today's gaming notebooks need a graphics card that is fast, powerful and energy-efficient," said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager, graphics business unit, AMD. "The AMD Radeon HD 8970M GPU is the perfect combination of technologies, blending performance, immersive features and an extensive battery life that delivers an unrivalled gaming experience, even on the go," he added.
