Software major Microsoft Corp. is reportedly planning to launch a 7-inch version of its Surface tablet. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the 7-inch version Surface tablets will go into mass production later this year.

Aiming to compete with similar size tablets from Apple and Google, Microsoft plans to come up with a new lineup of Surface tablets.

With the smaller version of Surface, Microsoft aims to keep pace with the growing popularity of 7-inch Google Nexus and the 7.9-inch iPad Mini. The company's move, if true, comes when sales of desktop and notebook computers are sinking.

One in every two tablets shipped the fourth quarter was below 8-inches in screen size, according to International Data Corp. (IDC) report. The market research firm also expect smaller tablets to continue growing in 2013 and beyond, in terms of shipments.

"Vendors are moving quickly to compete in this space as consumers realise that these small devices are often more ideal than larger tablets for their daily consumption habits."

Microsoft started shipping its 10.6-inch Surface RT tablet in October last year. IDC commented "Microsoft's decision to push two different tablet operating systems, Windows 8 and Windows RT, has yielded poor results in the market so far."
