2012: Industry rocked by over 85,000 job cuts

No. of cuts: 1,550
Semiconductor and solar panel production equipment maker Applied Materials Inc. will eliminate 900 to 1,300 jobs through a voluntary retirement programme and layoffs. The company also announced plans to relocate its solar wafer manufacturing facilities to Asia from Switzerland, affecting about 250 employees.

Cisco
No. of cuts: 1,300
Networking giant Cisco Systems plans to cut about 1,300 jobs in connection with ongoing restructuring at the company. The layoffs are part of the company's "continuous process of simplifying the company, as well as assessing the economic environment."

Freescale
No. of cuts: 900
Freescale Semiconductor cuts nearly 5 per cent of its global workforce, which, according to the company was not a cost-cutting move. Freescale said it will discontinue its standalone digital signal processor (DSP) business, as they see hard to compete with TI in this space.
