Texas Instruments Inc. introduces the DRV8834, DRV8835 and DRV8836 motor drivers that are said to slash power consumption up to 80 per cent and board space up to 95 per cent in brushed DC and stepper motor applications.

The devices are available as part of its highly integrated DRV8x motor driver portfolio and provide a wide, low-voltage operating range, low RDS(ON) and ultra-low sleep currents.

On-chip 32-step microstepping indexer and advanced motion control features on the DRV8834 minimise torque ripple for quiet, ultra-smooth motion in applications such as security video cameras, medical and office automation equipment.

Low RDS(ON) of 305mΩ and an ultra-low sleep current as low as 10nA claims improved thermal performance and extended battery life in applications, such as toys, e-locks, cameras, point-of-sale printers and smart meters.

High level of integration, such as an on-chip indexer and current control loops, provides greater intelligence to reduce design complexity while minimising microcontroller (MCU) MIPS requirements and software development, speeding time to market compared to discrete solutions, according to TI.

Tiny 2mm x 3mm package option for the DRV8835 and DRV8836 further reduces board space.

Over-current, over-temperature, shoot-though and under-voltage lock-out increase system reliability and manufacturing yields.

Evaluation modules (EVMs) are available today to quickly evaluate all three devices. Suggested retail pricing for the DRV8834EVM is Rs.4,900.99 ($99). The DRV8835EVM and DRV8836EVM are available for a suggested retail price of Rs.2,425.74 ($49), respectively.

The new DRV8x devices are all available to sample and purchase today.

The DRV8834 stepper motor driver with a 2.5V to 10.8V operating range; up to 2.2A peak output current; and on-chip 32 step microstepping indexer, is available in a 8mm x 6mm HTSSOP package today. It will be available in a 4mm x 4mm QFN package in 2Q12. Pricing is Rs.56.93 ($1.15) for 1,000 unit quantities for the HTSSOP or QFN option.

The DRV8835 stepper or brushed DC motor driver with 2V to 11V operating range; up to 1.5A output current per bridge; and separate logic and motor power supplies, is available in a 2mm x 3mm WSON package today at Rs.34.65 ($0.70) for 1,000 unit quantities.

The DRV8836 stepper or brushed DC motor driver with 2V to 7V operating range; up to 1.5A output current per bridge; and dedicated sleep pin, is available in 2mm x 3mm WSON package today at Rs.34.65 ($0.70) for 1,000 unit quantities.
