NXP Semiconductors has acquired the electronic design and IP company Catena Group electronic for an undisclosed sum.

According to NXP, the acquisition will strengthen its leadership in the automotive analogue mixed signal solutions business and in wireless car connectivity.

On completion of the deal, NXP will own 100 per cent of the Catena shares, while Catena will continue to operate as a separate design company.

This deal would give NXP access to Catena's patents, IP and proprietary development tools, while enabling Catena to continue serving third party companies on a stand-alone basis.

Netherlands-based Catena has subsidiaries in Austria, Sweden and performs consultancy on IC architecture, circuit design and contract research, as well as IC design, IP development and training with particular emphasis on analogue, mixed-signal and wireless technologies. Catena also provides IC design training services. The company also claims to have developed IP in the area of MEMS gyroscopes and accelerometers.

"By securing continuity of Catena's IP skills and competencies in wireless RF mixed signal technologies, this acquisition will enable NXP to capitalise on the growing demand from car manufacturers for new technologies such as CO2 reduction and connected mobility, wirelessly connecting the car to infrastructure, to other cars, as well as connecting the car to the driver."

NXP has a long-standing relationship with Catena, and NXP already generates up to 60 per cent of Catena's yearly sales.
