NPD DisplaySearch reports the findings of its quarterly shipment and forecast report on small and medium displays. The analyst estimates that AMOLED shipments in 2011 tipped 9 crore units and revenue is expected to be at Rs.17,142.86 crore ($3.36 billion). These are 97 and 169 per cent y-o-y growth, respectively, for shipments and revenue.

AMOLED penetration into the small/medium (9inch and smaller) display market has been growing as the screens have taken more of the market away from TFT LCDs. In 2010, AMOLEDs had only 6 per cent share of small/medium active matrix flat panel display market, and it is expected to have doubled to 12 per cent in 2011, largely due to smartphones.

Revenues for the smartphone segment more than doubled in 2011, with increasing shipments and higher ASPs due to larger screen sizes and increased display performance. In the first three quarters of 2011, shipments for smartphones of 3.5inch and larger AMOLED displays reached 5.97 crore units, up three-fold from the same period in 2010.

Hiroshi Hayase, VP of small/medium display research, NPD DisplaySearch, noted that "Samsung Mobile Displays has been a key driver of the growth of AMOLEDs, with the company accounting for 97.5 per cent of all AMOLED shipments." He added, "Looking to capitalise on the growing market demand, LG Display, AUO, and CMI also are planning to ship AMOLEDs for smartphones in 2012."

Samsung's Galaxy line of smartphones has been the leading adopter of AMOLED displays with high contrast and motion picture response time, while Apple's iPhone uses a high resolution TFT LCD with IPS technology. The competition between the iPhone and Galaxy has brought increased attention to the AMOLED displays, currently produced only by Samsung Mobile Display.

The report also said that Samsung Mobile has a new Gen 5.5 fab running and it is manufacturing larger AMOLED displays for applications such as Samsung's Galaxy Note and Tab tablet PCs, as well as supplying outside customers.

Also, LG Display is shipping AMOLEDs to LG Electronics for external mobile phone displays and it plans to produce a 55inch AMOLED TVs in 2012.

In terms of new market segments, AMOLEDs are getting into gaming consoles, such as Sony's PS-Vita portable game, which features a 5inch AMOLED.
