Mobile digital gadgets such as smartphones, tablets etc may have overshadowed the personal computers market globally; but, this is not the case in India. According to latest figures released by the research firm IDC, the India PC market shipments for Q3 2011 (July – September 2011) stood at 30.90 lakh units i.e. a significant sequential growth of 26.6 per cent over the previous quarter even as the overall year on year growth was noted to be at 10.8 per cent.

"PC market in India thumped initial expectations and the overall market tipped off 30 lakh units in Q3 2011, registering the highest shipments as noted ever in the India PC market," reported IDC.

According to Kiran Kumar, senior analyst, IDC, "The growth in Q3 was anticipated as it traditionally remains to be the largest quarter (in terms of shipments) for the India PC market. Pent-up demand and a festive season fuelled growth in the consumer segment. While Government aided expenditure and moderating domestic demand drove the growth in the commercial segments."

As per the report, Dell maintained its market leadership with a 15.5 per cent market share during the quarter; while HP leaped back with a strong growth to reclaim the second spot with a 13.8 per cent share "thanks to a revamp in its product-mix and a successful channel re-alignment model." Lenovo clinched the third spot with a 12.3 per cent share. "Lenovo's success in the enterprise and consumer segments were however well anticipated," commented Kumar. "And, others account for 58.4 per cent of the market share."

Portables witnessed an electrifying sequential growth of 46.8 per cent and a year-on-year growth of 28.8 per cent. Transition from the traditional desktops was quite evident as the consumer purchase behaviour shifted to notebooks and emerging form factors like all-in-one PCs.

However, Adwaita Menon, associate research director, IDC, commented, "IDC expects the recent floods in Thailand and its subsequent impact on components i.e. primarily hard disc drives to cause a disruption in the India PC market in the near future. In addition to the supply shortage due to the recent floods in Thailand, IDC also projects the market to be impacted due to surging dollar rates that will result in rising ASVs, which is expected to further impact the growth across segments, in the days to come."
