M2M technology advances aid in low-cost applications

The local sensor network is a set of nodes that periodically report data to a coordinator for processing. The coordinator node inside the gateway solution gathers the information from nearby sensor nodes over a wireless network, processes the data and sends out the requested information using larger wireless network such as GPRS.

Another important factor is the long battery life cycle. According to an internal Telit study, based on typical conditions, Short Range modules can operate up to eleven years in the field before battery replacement. The output power can vary from 1mW up to 500mW. All modules operate in the most common ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) licence-free frequency bands such as 433MHz, 868MHz, 915MHz or 2.4GHz for ZigBee, guaranteeing a worldwide coverage.

All short range functionalities are included in the gateway and thereby enable the access and control of the local network, the data message flow and the command execution to an external IP host completely transparently. In this way all necessary communication will be done through a web server directly with the management interface of the gateway.

The behaviour of the gateway can be customised through the embedded Linux interface with a complete development environment and additional dedicated libraries for GSM and Short Range while the configuration of the main GSM/GPRS and Short Range network parameters will be handled over a web interface.

Short range technologies reduce energy costs
The combination of short range and cellular technologies in a key solution opens new horizons for the short range network structures and means another revolution for the M2M technology. In times where that the world becomes more concerned about rising energy costs, short range is increasingly viewed as a leading technology as it helps reduce energy cost in home and commercial buildings through smart energy products. But only with GSM/GPRS integration we can fully benefit from the low power consumption of Short Range, the intelligent mesh network topology and take advantage of low-cost technology together with a significant cost reduction on data transmission paying only for data sent by the gateway once for 10,000 or more short range nodes.

To keep up with this development it is eminent to invest in the future and to target emerging markets in the M2M space. The focus should be on the combination of different technologies such as GSM/GPRS and SR. Thus, the investment should lead to innovative, reliable and optimised M2M applications.
